Studio teaching
I teach small-group botanical watercolour classes from my studio in the Netherlands.
My workshops are based on close observation, the behaviour of pigment, paper and brush, and working directly from nature.
Rather than following a fixed set of tutorials, we paint new subjects together each session in a live studio setting where process, demonstration, and individual guidance are central.

“I believe the most effective learning happens through direct, live engagement”
For that reason, all my classes are taught live. This allows you to work alongside me in real time, ask questions as they arise, and receive individual feedback on your work. Often, the most valuable questions come later, once you’ve had time to process and apply what you’ve learned.
Small groups
I work with a limited group of students each month (12 max) to ensure each participant receives focused guidance and support throughout the course.
What you will learn
You will learn all the basic techniques for painting realistic botanical watercolours from life, including: setting up your subject, lighting, composition, creating a line drawing, seeing tonal values and creating form, colour mixing, building a painting in transparant layers (washes), the wet-in-wet technique, wet-on-dry technique, dry brushing, glazing, creating texture, how to capture the character of your subject, achieving realism, and all kinds of specific knowledge on botanical watercolor painting and the materials we work with. Each session focuses on one theme, which we draw, paint, and develop into a finished study.
Course themes
Seasonal leaves, flowers, fruit & vegetables depending on availability (announced for each session in advance). We paint from life, but reference photo’s are made available if needed.
Equipment
You are free to use your own materials. A recommended materials list is provided for optimal results: Equipment

“Many students come to me because they are inspired by my work.”
My teaching is closely connected to my own practice as a botanical artist. Through these classes, I aim to share insight into my working process and support students in developing their own observational skills and painting practice. I teach botanical watercolour painting throughout most of the year.
As a member of the Society of Botanical Artists and the Verein Botanische Kunst Deutschland, I am connected to a living tradition of botanical art, which shapes the core and structure of my teaching.
Below you can read what students have shared about their experience in my classes..
Looking for more freedom or compact learning opportunities?
I regularly teach seasonal workshops online and on location, and these might be just what you are looking for. I also offer private workshops and teaching to a limited number of students.
